The MIT Faculty has made this article openly available. Please share how this access benefits you. Your story matters. Self-consistent particle-in-cell simulations are performed to verify earlier theoretical predictions of adiabatic thermal beams in a periodic solenoidal magnetic focusing field [K. In particular, results are obtained for adiabatic thermal beams that do not rotate in the Larmor frame. For such beams, the theoretical predictions of the rms beam envelope, the conservations of the rms thermal emittances, the adiabatic equation of state, and the Debye length are verified in the simulations. Furthermore, the adiabatic thermal beam is found be stable in the parameter regime where the simulations are performed.

Control of Chaotic Particle Motion Using Adiabatic Thermal Beams
Charged-particle motion is studied in the self-electric and self-magnetic fields of a well-matched, intense charged-particle beam and an applied periodic solenoidal magnetic focusing field. The beam is assumed to be in a state of adiabatic thermal equilibrium. The phase space is analyzed and compared with that of the well-known Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij (KV)-type beam equilibrium. It is found th...

Halo formation and control in space-charge-dominated electron and ion beams are investigated in parameter regimes relevant to the development of high-power microwave (HPM) sources and highintensity electron and ion linear accelerators. In particular, a mechanism for electron beam halo formation is identified in high-power periodic permanent magnet (PPM) focusing klystron amplifiers. It is found...
متن کاملSpace-charge effects on laser-accelerated proton beams captured by a solenoidal magnetic field
In context of the LIGHT project (Laser-Ion Generation, Handling and Transport) [1], studies on the capability of a solenoidal magnetic field to collimate and transport laser-accelerated proton beams were carried out. Results of preliminary particle-in-cell simulations [2] and experiments at the PHELIX laser facility [1, 3] demand a detailed analysis of the space-charge influence. Therefore, the...

Preliminary studies on neutrino factories use solenoids at different stages. Often quoted is the adiabatic device, a long solenoid with a slowly decreasing field used to capture pions behind the target. In cooling sections as well, design reports show lattices using solenoids with alternating field to contain the beam. This note describes the transverse behaviour of charged particles in a solen...
